Foodscape – Brunswick St

on

Brunswick Street located in the suburb of Fitzroy has a strong food scene, providing a bubbly and nonstop atmosphere both along the crowded footpaths and inside the thriving restaurants.

The street provides rich cultural diversity and unique food options due to the meshing of many international cuisines. Walking along Brunswick street, there is welcoming and inclusive ambiance, and majority of the food places passed appeared bright and engaging. There is a wide array of different smells wafting from each restaurant you pass, attributed to the different flavours and meals produced from these different cultures. It is a noisy atmosphere, with sounds of trams running along the centre, as well as the busy hustle of people moving along the sides.

From traditional family-oriented Italian restaurants to cute and cosy French creperies, Brunswick Street provides an option for any every-day person in Melbourne, at quite affordable prices.

Quick on-the-go options such as pizzas and rice paper rolls appealed to myself as a university student with a busy schedule, however I can also appreciate the side to Brunswick street which caters towards families and friends enjoying conventional sit-down meals together.

As a young Aussie with not a strong sense of national identity in relation to food, I can appreciate the rich history behind many of the restaurants along Brunswick street, with food playing a major role in their ties back to other countries. The family-oriented Mario’s Italian restaurant also brought me a sense of nostalgia for my own childhood eating dinner around my nan’s dining table.
